What Vitamins or supplements do you take?
« on: May 17, 2008, 04:08:56 AM »
As a relative newbie to this WoE I'm curious as to what vitamins and supplements you feel are necessary to enhance your Paleo Diet, or if you don't take any why you feel you don't need to.

I am currently not taking any supplements at all, and am throwing this out to try to get some opinions to help me decide whether I'm making the best decision for myself!

In the past I have at times used supplements - a couple of years ago I was taking a multivitamin, a calcium + vit D, and a fish oil, but I eventually discontinued.  Then I took a high strength B-complex plus C for a while.  Neither of these seemed to make any difference to the way I felt so in recent months I haven't bothered  with pills at all, although I have on ocassion added wheatgrass and/or spirilina to my smoothiesl!

I take two cod liver oil capsules, one fish oil capsule, one standard multivitamin and one extra-strength glucosamine/chondroitin pill every morning.

The G/C really does seem to alleviate pain in my knees.  The fish capsules seem to have pretty good evidence of helping with heart function and I take the multivitamin simply as an inexpensive insurance policy.

Personally, I don't like taking supplements.  I take a fish oil capsule only if I haven't had oily fish for 2 - 3 days.  I don't take vitamins except in the form of fresh veg and fruit etc!  I did use to use whey protein powders before going Paleo.

Thanks for your replies! :)

My current thinking is to continue without vitamins or supplements for the first three months of this WoE and see how I'm feeling  - then I'll decide if I feel it would be worth me adding in any vit pills or supplements.

I'm not a big fan of popping pills so I'd like to avoid it unless I think it will bring any tangable benefits.

I have magnesium issues.  I usually don't take any supplements, but if I feel muscle twitchiness coming on I take a few magnesium pills and it clears up.

Currently I am taking a prenatal vitamin because my husband and I would like to start a family sometime in the near future and I want to keep all my bases covered.  I couldn't live with myself if I had a baby born with spina bifida or something just because I didn't think I needed a supplement.  I don't feel like the supplement is making any difference in my health, but like I said, I'd rather just take it at this point.

I take a lot of supplements due to the fact that I work at a Vitamin store and get free supplements like crazy. I can personally vouche for the fact that they do work. Example: If I stop taking COQ10 my gums get irritated. If I don't take my B-Complex, I tend to get more irritable, etc.... Oh and by the way props to you taking the pre-natal. That's one of the best things a women can do for herself. It's amazing the amound of deficiencies people are suffering from and don't realize it. Basically it's my job to know about vitamins. I study everyday, and get training on a regular basis. So let me know if anyone has any questions.

Well, my question would be, what deficiencies are most likely on a paleolithic diet without grains or dairy, and what would be the best food sources to avoid them?

For example, what would be a good source of the B complex vitamins without resorting to supplements?

Liver is very high in B vitamins, I believe.  http://www.nutritiondata.com/facts/lamb-veal-and-game-products/4671/2

A lot of meats in general are going to be good sources of B vitamins, as well as eggs. You should check out Earl Mindell's "Vitamin Bible". It's an excellent book about supplementation, as well as natural sources for vitamins, and minerals.

I don't take anything, this diet is plenty of all the vitamins, minerals and elements that our body requires.
I'm Spanish, I apologized for my English.

None!

I have thought about taking fish oil, but only as we can't get hold of decently priced grass fed beef.

Good to see there are a few others who don't take anything either  ;D
The "Seven Deadly Sins"

• Grains (wheat/rice/oats etc) . . . . . • Dairy (milk/yogurt/butter/cheese etc)
• Refined foods (salt/sugars etc ) . . • Nightshades (peppers/tomato/eggplant)
• Tubers (potato/arrowroot etc) . . . . • Legumes (soy/beans/peas)
• Modernly palatable (cashews/olives etc)

I take vit D. I live in the north and don't see the sun much during the winter months. Vit D deficiency is common around here, so I just want to be safe. I'm also breastfeeding and want to make sure that my baby is getting enough vit D (she doesn't see the sun much either  ;) ) I also take fish oil as I have very dry skin, it seems to help. I alternate with flaxseed oil every now and then, as it is high in omega-3 and a cheaper alternative. I eat salmon everyday, but I still need that extra fat to keep my skin soft and smooth.

Just to update my last post as this got bumped  :P

We are now taking fish oil.  We have also found a supplier of grass-fed beef, so maybe we can drop the fish oil now anyway...
