What's Your Take on L-Glutamine?
« on: July 26, 2010, 09:40:43 AM »
Hi everyone,

I've noticed every 3-4 months I get sick and have to take 3-4 days off from the gym and work.  I have a feeling this might be due to the mental and physical stress I put myself under (I workout 2-3 days per week, go to college full-time, and run two side business').

I've read alot of studies regarding the benefits of L-Glutamine to counteract this stress. I know it's not Paleo but I think it might help.  Supposedly it helps boost the immune system, speed recovery from exercise, build muscle, and counteract stress.  I'm wondering if anyone in here has seen any success (or lack of) from it?

If anyone does take it, what is a brand you have had good luck with?

I've used it for 2 months and didn't notice any change on my recovery speed or anything else... so I'm just not using it anymore

I took it when I was strictly low carb, but before transitioning over to paleo. I used Nature’s Best brand, just because that was what was available to me. I was lifting heavier low rep weights at the time, and used it for glutamine’s reputation to stave off muscle loss during severe low carb programs. What positive or negative effects did it have on me? I don’t know.

I mixed a tablespoon of it with a tablespoon of sugar-free orange flavor Metamucil, a few tablespoons of whey protein powder, and water (or almond milk). Each ingredient should be whisked as it’s added otherwise you end up with a lumpy mess.

Are those ingredients paleo? NO. But it was tasty…kind of like an orange dreamsicle.

I still use the Metamucil daily. My body is so much happier with it. And after a workout, if I don’t have the inclination to cook or have a pile of meat on hand, I’ll still mix in the whey powder.

How is your sleep? Do get a solid 8+ a night? Do you stay up late watching the tv or playing on the computer? I'd been feeling fatigued and having trouble falling asleep at night until I started taking melatonin 2 hrs before my bedtime. It took a couple of weeks, but now I get tired gradually and fall asleep within minutes of my head hitting the pillow. I certainly feel a lot more rested in the morning. I think it does a lot of good to relieve stress simply by getting one's Circadian rhythm back in line.

...until I started taking melatonin 2 hrs before my bedtime.

I used to take melatonin as well but stopped after hearing that supplementation will down-regulate natural production of this hormone.  There are many sites that deal with how taking melatonin can be tricky.

This is one:

I don't know how much to believe is factual but I'll err on the side of caution on this.

I don't know anyone using l-glut for as a sleep aid. I do use it as it is extremely effective whenever I get carb cravings. It shuts it right down. Amazing stuff !

If you eat a significant amount of fruit, take a vitamin C supplement.  Modern fruit has much less vitamin C than wild fruit has.
