Fish oil problem..
« on: May 27, 2010, 03:31:08 PM »
I decided to get some fish oil pills and started taking last night. Said 1-2 a day, took 1 yesterday and 1 today.. I woke up this morning with stomach pains and diarrhea..

Just wondering if anyone has taken them and if this has happened to you. I have looked online and it says that stomach problems are a side effect but I thought maybe being paleo might make a difference. I have suffered from irritable bowel so maybe this makes it flair up, especially with a couple ingredients that may be a little processed and unnatural.

Regardless, I am done taking them just wondering if anyone else experienced the same thing.

You might be needing some digestive enzymes, it may have been that you didn't have enough to digest the fat. Enzymes with your meals would also do a lot for irritable bowel syndrome.

That makes sense. The thing is before taking the fish oil and being paleo, my stomach has never felt better and I have no trouble with it at all.. Your suggestion makes sense but I almost feel like it is pointless to take a pill so I can comfortably take a pill, if that makes any sense.. My best bet is probably just eat more fish but I do appreciate the tip and will definitely look more into it..

Sounds like rancid oil to me. I take fish oil but not in capsules because you can't tell if it's rancid in the capsule. Rancid oil is really bad news and will cause diarrhea. I know you probably just bought them so they shouldn't be rancid but it's hard to say how long and where they were stored before you bought them.

I take fermented fish oil - which I would think would also be easier to digest. It's not the most enjoyable 10 seconds while taking the spoonful but it's not so terrible. The key is to chase it by sucking on a lemon or lime wedge - kinda like when people take a lemon drop shot. I'd take a shot of fermented fish oil over vodka any day  ;)

Here's the brand and flavor (or lack thereof) that I use and highly recommend...

It also really helps to take the fish oil at the same time as a meal. I get sick to my stomach sometimes if I take it too far away from food.

Yes! This happened to me with a previous brand... well, not exactly, but it makes my stomach all a-rumble. Stomach problems can come from two places: (a) gelatin - you may be sensitive. Try piercing the pills and squeezing them into something. That may help. (b) Bad oil. It should usually be stored in the fridge.

Additionally, I've seen some theories that too much DHA can cause fatigue and other issues. I know I stopped taking fish oil because of fatigue

I think I had the worst reaction. I had chest pains from taking fish oil. I thought I was having a heart attack.  It was a serious GERD reaction.

I get the same issues from almost any "capsule" form of fish oil.

I've been drinking approximately 1/8th of a cup of Carlsen's fish oil with lemon flavor before bed for the last two years of my life though, even when not exactly paleo. It is palatable, easy to tell if it's gone bad (it's not in a capsule so you can smell the difference), and keeps my omega 3's at about 400%-600% or more the USRDA (depending on my other daily foods). I've never had a problem with this fish oil, ever.
Diets fail because society as a whole believes body image is more important than health. The problem is that obesity is simply one of many symptoms of an illness, not the illness itself.

And I'm being cured.

Heart problems are the number-one killer of American men and women, which is odd considering that heart problems were an uncommon cause of death at the beginning of the 20th century. While it's true that more people died of infectious diseases in those days and often didn't live long enough to die of , they also consumed much greater amounts of long-chain Omega 3 fatty acids found in fish oil. As subsequent generations began eating less fish and more beef, their rate of heart problems shot up.
Fish that contain the highest level of mercury are larger and older sharks, swordfish, king mackerel, and tilefish. It is probably a good idea for most people to avoid eating much of these fish. They can be replaced with other fish and shellfish such as shrimp, pollock, canned light tuna, salmon and catfish, which all contain much less mercury.

For God sakes people, if you're going to buy vitamins get some sh*t that isn't stale and is high quality.

I hate to keep pimping iHerb, but they're incredible for how cheap you can get GREAT quality stuff shipped quickly and affordably.
