Are protein supplements needed?
« on: March 15, 2010, 05:32:48 PM »
I just started going to a gym today and of course they make you think that you simply can't build muscle without expensive protein powder. Now that I'm on a mostly meat and eggs diet surely I'm getting enough protein, right?

Avoid them like the plague. You'll do great without them and should easily be getting enough protein.
The answer to your question is 'eat more fat'.

Stop counting calories. If you are eating Paleo, there is usually no need.

If you are having weight loss issues, it'd be a good idea to start posting a detailed food journal, then everyone can help.

'Anecdotal Evidence' is an oxymoron.

I'm pretty sure the message was spam, Sarah. New user with only 1 post and a link in the signature.

Yup. I gotta disagree as well. At least in my particular set of circumstances. I use a good quality whey protein( yeah I know....not paleo) in two circumstances; prior to/after competition/training mixed in unsweetened applesauce or in a shake as a quick meal replacement.

I find the whey mixes up real nice(shaken...not stirred) and mixed with Almond Breeze along with a banana(or other fruit) makes for a fast "on the run" meal.

Other than that I get all I need from seafood or meat.

a balanced diet contains more than enough protein. Avoid them.

It's true that weight lifters and other high-powered athletes need more protein than the rest of us. Recent studies suggest that a 200-pound athlete should eat between 120 and 180 grams of protein every day, while a 200-pound Internet writer can get by quite nicely on only 70 to 90 grams. A little extra protein for most people won't do much harm, so feel free to have a protein bar now and then. But you can definitely overdo it. According to a report in the journal Clinical Pharmacy, a protein overload can cause stomach trouble, dehydration, gout, and calcium loss, as well as damage to the liver and kidneys.

No-one on Paleo should need any kind of artificial protein like a protein bar.

Cheap protein comes at a cost anyway. Lax FDA regulations mean that plenty of protein products, especially whey, are irradiated to prevent bacterial growth... not to mention a more recent study (consumer reports) that had a showdown of popular protein powders and their heavy metal contaminant levels.  EAS had 17mcg of arsenic/3 servings! Muscle Milk had 13.5mcg of LEAD/3 servings!

I lived off this crap for several years of my life. Very, very frustrating now to even think about it.
Diets fail because society as a whole believes body image is more important than health. The problem is that obesity is simply one of many symptoms of an illness, not the illness itself.

And I'm being cured.

Eating real food will benefit you far more than eating protein powders.

Of course the downside to that is if you do a lot of exercising and have a lot of muscle to maintain, cooking and eating 200+ grams of protein per day can be a little difficult especially when you work full time.  Not to mention how much 200grams of quality meat protein costs.

This is why I think so many bodybuilders etc rely on carbs to fill the caloric gap.  Any Joe blow can eat 300 grams of carbs per day, eating 300+ grams of protein (especially in meat form) is a entirely different beast.  That is a LOT of steak and chicken breast.

Kai Greene (a top bodybuilder) is one of the few that follows a more paleo approach in this sense.  He consumes 500-1000 grams of protein every day, and did it without powders for a long time.

Two words to save your life: pemmican and jerky.

I buy pemmican in bulk (US Wellness) and make a load of jerky once a week
