Sleep and paleo diet
« on: August 26, 2010, 02:19:22 PM »
This discussion started in the introduction thread for No3Putts. Pretty interesting stuff.

Anecdotally: I've never had a 'normal' sleep pattern, often waking and sometimes not sleeping at all. Been like this since a small child. Until middle age I was always a night owl as well, but now that I'm older I need to go to bed earlier - this seems to be a usual story lol

Because I work with, rather than against, my own normal sleep pattern, I often get stuff done in the middle of the night.

I looked up sleeping problems on paleohacks and found many had changes in sleep pattern:

There is an interesting answer there on segmented or bimodal sleep which, in a nutshell, is found in pre-industrialised societies and has been studied. Here is an article:

Article in Psychiatric Times on interrupted sleep basically talks about the same sleep patterns. It seems that our reliance on artificial light and alarm clocks means that we are working at variance with 'normal' sleep patterns. Its another article where it's suggested that practitioners of modern medicine look at a behaviour from a different perspective.

Actually there are several articles in popular media where the findings about segmented sleep have been summarised, usually under a banner stating that segmented sleep may be normal

Just as an add on, there are also studies that seem to show that a high fat diet causes sleep disturbance. The studies typically increase fat in the diet but do not lower carbohydrate or resemble the paleo diet.

I'm wondering if sleep could be disturbed more than normal by the body adjusting to the fat content in this diet (hey the digestive system has to and we are not made up of isolated systems). Because sleep is partially habitual, this could also influence the time taken to adjust.

I can't imagine a normal sleep pattern including being up at night.

I'd suggest working toward a real normal pattern if possible.  You're also probably being limited by cortisol-related issues due to sleep issues/stress and non-normal hours.

Keep us up to date as you experiment with this..

This research says we need to get a minimum of 9.5 hours a night; that our health is being compromised by artificial lighting.
Something about still being cavemen in a modern world.....

More seriously, lack of sleep inhibits the production of prolactin and melatonin--deranging our immune systems and causing depression, diabetes, heart disease, and cancer. The authors prescribe sleeping at least nine and a half hours in total darkness in the fall and winter and switching to a diet low in carbohydrates and high in protein, vegetables, and healthy fats.

Thanks for looking into this. A few days after I posted, things subsided and my sleep has become much more regular.
