Not surprising.  As long as your fat cells can handle it, excess calories are safely stored as fat.  It's when your fat cells can't absorb the carbs any more that metabolic syndrome ensues.

To put it another way, fat cells shield people from the bad effects of too much food.  It's still better to eat paleo and not absorb too much food in the first place, though.
