What is Creamed Coconut?

Creamed Coconut, also known as Coconut Concentrate, is the unsweetened dehydrated fresh meat of a mature fruit of coconut ground to a semi-solid white creamy paste. It can be eaten as is or used in cooking.

Don't confuse Creamed Coconut and Coconut Cream. Coconut Cream has maximum moisture content of 74.6% whereas Creamed Coconut has moisture content of 3% maximum, hence the name Coconut Concentrate. Creamed coconut (Coconut Concentrate) is creamy white colour and tastes rich, creamy and mildly sweet with the essence of coconut. It comes as a solid block and is 100% coconut.

Creamed Coconut can be used as ingredient for food and beverages that require coconut flavour. It tastes good eaten as it is. It can be refrigerated and then crumbled or grated, or you can let it soften.

When reconstituted with water, it can be made into both coconut cream and coconut milk. Creamed Coconut has the versatility to vary consistency or flavor intensity by simply adding water.

1 part Creamed Coconut + 2.5 parts water = Coconut Cream
1 part Creamed Coconut + 5 parts water = Coconut Milk

Shelf life for Creamed Coconut is 18 months. Once opened, the Creamed Coconut can be stored in ambient temperature provided it is kept away from moisture by simply closing the lid. It is solid as butter at temperature below 23 deg. C. Creamed Coconut melts at temperature exceeding 23 deg. C. This is reversible and should not affect the quality.

Thanks for the info.   I haven't seen this in any stores (yet!) but did find a few places to get this online.  I assume you keep this in the fridge after opening...  how long can it sit after you open it?

I keep in fridge but I live where it is hot. Seems to keep for ages - months? Um... I confess that I do tend to pick at it so it's more a case of running out than it going off lol

The brand that I have always bought is imported (to Australia) from Sri Lanka.
