Walking Backwards into the Future
« on: October 09, 2009, 08:13:31 PM »
I had been so wrapped up into what I have been eating, I never even thought about talking about progress.

Let's start at the beginning...August 24th, 2009

Who is Lone_woLf?

Gender:                                Female
Age:                                     27
Height:                                 5' 2.5" (159 cm)
Beginning weight:                 177.3 (80.4 kg)
Beginning BMI:                       31.8 (mildly obese)

There may be photos at some point in the future...I don't know. I'm undecided about when I should post some.

Up until today October 9th, 2009

Weight:   169.1 (76.8 kg)
BMI:       31.12 (mildly obese)

I remember when I was at my heaviest. I would sit on the couch and if I wanted to change positions, it was so hard to do. I could really feel my weight when I walk. Getting up from the couch now hardly takes any effort at all.

My skin looks so much better. My face was reddish and inflamed-looking. I could really see my pores. Shortly after I started my diet, I didn't need the Neutrogena Deep Clean facial wash once a day any more. I think I may have used it once since then.

I used to have depression and anxiety issues. I realize that the despairing feeling that I associated with sadness actually seemed to originate in my gut as a mild pain that barely registers. I still have anxiety, but it is no longer something that paralyzes me, I am capable of acting in spite of it. I am clear-headed and am in a bright mood. I am more willing to deal with issues than I was before--although that may have been a precondition for the diet instead of a result.

(note to future self: this is the day I took my before picture)

I'm happy things are working out for you. BTW, you didn't say when the first (or initial) measurements were taken. Add that up there :)

Over the past few days, I seem to be oscillating between 168.9 and 170.5.
Literally:
Tuesday     168.9
Wednesday 170.6 (cheat day)
Thursday    168.9 (day of anticipated weight gain)
Friday        170.4

A plateau, already? What's going on here ???

168.9 lbs.

I wouldn't recommend weighing yourself every day. It will only bring frustration, etc.

Make a habit to only step on the scale on Sunday morning, just after waking up and emptying your water tank (if you get me). It will make the weight more reliable, and the process less stressful.

What's your diet like? Are you eating too many fruits?

Lone_Wolf, Fluctuations like that are water. I agree with AJ, weigh yourself once a week on the same day and time each week. Keep up the good work!

I don't know how anyone can tell anything with a few pounds difference, even over a week.

My weigh can change by 3kg in a day or two.  I never know what's going on  ???

It's only over the course of weeks that you might notice real differences.
The "Seven Deadly Sins"

• Grains (wheat/rice/oats etc) . . . . . • Dairy (milk/yogurt/butter/cheese etc)
• Refined foods (salt/sugars etc ) . . • Nightshades (peppers/tomato/eggplant)
• Tubers (potato/arrowroot etc) . . . . • Legumes (soy/beans/peas)
• Modernly palatable (cashews/olives etc)

Thanks, everyone.
My problem is that it seems my weight has stagnated. And I was expecting a consistent weight loss. I don't care if it is 1/10th of a pound everyday or every other day the amount doesn't matter. Stagnation would be understandable if I was at near-normal weight (138 max), but at the very beginning? I'll body test once a week, on the same day that I weigh myself. The Wii Fit can't tell me what to do! ;D

I was eating a meat based diet, with some vegetables (greens mostly, or whatever happened to be cooked with the meat meal) and a little bit of fruit (MAYBE 1 piece every day). Nuts I eat hardly at all. I have been doing it this way pretty much from the beginning (1 month,  fairly solid).

I don't think this is working very well for me. This is very different from what I have done in the past. My meals back then have been more like, by volume, 50% vegetables, 25% meat, 25% Fruit. With that ratio I have felt astronomical, happy, confident, better than any drug, love is everywhere. I tried that a couple nights ago and was giggling for no reason--it was weird, but the good kind. The way I eat now is more like, "Meh, I feel better than on SAD."

I think that kind of energy is what's required here.

I may oscillate between the two styles, because in the past I would get kind of sick of so much vegetable matter. I would feel like I got all of my nutrient requirements filled, don't need to be on this diet anymore, and then I would go back to SAD. This time, I'll just go back to mostly meat if that happens.

Am also thinking about taking L-carnitine supplements. Which is supposed to help transfer fat to the mitochondria in my cells. I bought them a while ago. The bottle reccomends I take four a day to achieve this purpose. The brand is Twin Lab.

BTW...I came in at 169.5 today.

As others have said, you can't tell much from day to day changes.  At most, you can expect to see something every week or two.  Even then, unless you're very careful to weigh in at the same time and under the same conditions every week, there will be a lot of variation.

You've lost about 8 pounds over the 6 weeks or so that you've beeing doing paleo.  That's about a pound and a half per week, or 0.2 pounds per day.  But if you drink a big glass of water, that will increase your weight by a pound; if you go to the bathroom, you may lose a pound.  One outfit may weigh a couple pounds different from another outfit.  With that kind of variation, there's no way you can see daily differences of a fraction of a pound.

Aside from that, I would say the same thing as I did to woopy a while back:  if you want more detailed advice, start a detailed food log, and let everyone look at it.  Log everything you eat, including amounts, down to the gram or fraction of an ounce.  Take a look at Marika's or Maria's logs for good examples.  Without logging the details, your guesses on what you eat are just a guess - and likely not a very accurate guess.

Edit:  I'd also recommend cutting out the cheat days.  You can have a cheat portion now and then, but a whole day is just asking for trouble.

That is ideal weight loss. Anything more than that and your body will retaliate by gaining double that the first chance it gets. Anything that you do to the body in a short period of time is unwelcome change and the body goes into survival mode.
Patience is the key to any goal when comes to the body. As it's said "Rome wasn't built in a day."

So I've been sick, PMS'd (TOM came yesterday--six weeks as usual) and so haven't been sticking to the diet and definitely not exercising.

Even so, today I weighed in at 168.4 (76.4 kg).

I guess I better start up on this way of eating before I undo that loss. Even though it is pretty cool that I seem to have my periods less frequently than most. It's harder to lose weight because I seem to stop losing about two weeks before the TOM. At least that's what happened this time. We'll see if this is a pattern.

Started your food log yet?
The answer to your question is 'eat more fat'.

Stop counting calories. If you are eating Paleo, there is usually no need.

If you are having weight loss issues, it'd be a good idea to start posting a detailed food journal, then everyone can help.

'Anecdotal Evidence' is an oxymoron.
