Five weeks - lost 25 pounds
« on: July 28, 2010, 08:12:03 AM »
Hi

I began on the paleo diet five weeks ago and have dropped 25 pounds from 285 to 260. I am 6 ft 5' and am finding this easy.

I stick to an egg for breakfast. Lunch is a handful of mixed salad, two or three tomatoes and either a chicken breast, some smoked salmon or a tin of tuna. Supper is either pork, lamb, beef or chicked and the same salad, maybe a chopped onion or carrot and lots of tomatoes. Plenty of fruit throughout the day - cherries, apples, bananas, strawberries, raspberries.

I have had coffee with milk and sugar four times a day. I have also carried on drinking red wine (four bottles a week). These are the only areas I have strayed off paleo - other than that I've had no cereals, grains or processed foods of any kind.

I excercise in the gym three times a week on the cross trainer - I do 40 minutes and burn 650 calories a session according to the machine.

All in all I am feeling great - I don't feel like I am on a diet because I have stiopped feeling hungry but do look forward to the delicious food I now eat.

Thanks to those of you here for all the informative information

Cheers!

Wow, that's a lot of weight loss for just 5 weeks. How do you feel otherwise? Mentally clear and energized?

Coffee with milk? Stay away from milk. If you want to keep dairy in there, use heavy cream - it's better for you.

And 4 bottles of wine a week? Holy crap, that's a lot of wine.

Congrats!

It's not much over 2 glasses a day, which is supposedly good for you.
The answer to your question is 'eat more fat'.

Stop counting calories. If you are eating Paleo, there is usually no need.

If you are having weight loss issues, it'd be a good idea to start posting a detailed food journal, then everyone can help.

'Anecdotal Evidence' is an oxymoron.

Welcome - nice going so far!  Eventually you may want to drop the milk and cut down on the wine, but so far it looks like good progress.

I accept the comments on the sugar and the milk and will cut them out over time.. Regarding the wine, I don't think that four bottles is a problem from a health perspective and I am quite sure that cavemen drank alcohol which is a natural result of fruit fermenting - so I also think it is OK from a paleo perspective.

In response to how I feel on this diet, I feel great. Very energised - I can do far more in the gym than I expected. I am also less tired in the evening. Most of all I am less hungry - that's the amazing thing. I eat an egg for breakfast (75 calories) and not all that hungry when I have lunch at 1:30pm after being in the gym for an hour. Before paleo I would have a bowl of cereal with milk and sugar and then a couiple of slices of toast and jam. By 12:00 I felt famished and would eat three bread rolls.

So yes, I am happy with this. I'll keep eating like this and see what weight I end up at.

Can someone explain why cream is better than milk in coffee? Is this a consensus view? I thought that cream was just concentrated milk!

Thanks, Jim

In this regard, it's worth noting that fruit juice is questionably paleo.  Obviously you get everthing you get in juice in the whole fruit as well, but the solids that bind the fruit together are beneficial in terms of regulating the digestion and the absorption of the sugar, as well as the simple amount one can ingest.  And certainly the fact that there's sugar in fruit doesn't mean sugar water is okay!

A similar argument applies to alcohol.  We may have eaten naturally fermented fruit, but that doesn't mean artificially fermented fruit juice - that is, wine - is paleo, and it certainly doesn't mean that vodka or whiskey is paleo.  I think you'd have to eat your alcohol rather than drink it to be paleo.

Most people also find that they become less tolerant to alcohol on paleo, so you may eventually find that you want less wine, anyway.

As Samjohn points out, both are nonpaleo.  However, cream seems to be less bad than milk as it has considerably less of the milk protein and little of the lactose that seem to be the most problematic parts of dairy.

In addition to what Warren said regarding cream - cream is NOT concentrated milk. If you ever milk a cow, and let the milk rest for a bit, it actually separates: cream on top, milk on bottom. There's actually an idiom "The cream rises to the top".

I've bought milk that doesn't have the cream removed before. It seemed gross at first because you get this real thick "plug" at the top of the bottle. You just have to shake it well.

I get more digestive issues with cream than I do milk.
Change requires you to scream, I'M NOT GONNA TAKE ANY MORE!...and then you don't.

Thanks for the replies - as always, very helpful and informative.

I am not a peleo expert and am not trying to redefine the diet - I am just stretching it to suit my own tastes. Regarding wine, I certainly have less tolerance so expect consumption will fall.

I'll try the cream in my coffee - sounds good!

Do what's in your comfort level for now. Your progress is excellent, remove things as time goes on

Just remember that this is a WOE and not a diet.  Almost no one can actually duplicate the exact diet of our cave people brothers and sisters.  Might be fun to try but I am sure living that exact lifestyle would crush most of us.  Damn, caveman envy showing... ::)
