Let's talk about poop (again)
« on: August 18, 2010, 09:27:15 AM »
Ok, this is about the third bowel-related thread I've started. But recently I've had lots of annoyances in this department.

A quick glossary, to make the paragraph below less crude:
  • Type A: Small output, little or no wiping required
  • Type B: Medium output, smears and requires multiple wipes
  • Type C: Same as Type B except in larger quantities and smells foul

So anyway, when I first started paleo, and was still including dairy and a handful of cheats, I was pretty much Type A most of the time. Later, I removed dairy and a few other small things. I rarely cheat anymore, but I am not very careful about sauces and things at restaurants. Minor stuff.

However, I am pretty much at Type B and C almost constantly these days. My suspicion is that this is cause by not being careful when eating out. The other night I ate a white wine sauce that contained cream (didn't know until it came to the table). However, this is just silly. 2 tablespoons of cream in a sauce and now I'm peeling paint off the walls the next morning? No, that's not how this is supposed to work.

Anyone else have any similar anecdotes or solutions here? I eat enough greens (I think) - I eat a salad almost every day, and include spinach in most of my meals at night.

In my experience, the sticky poop that requires more wiping seems to be associated with salt intake.  That's just a guess, though it does fit with the restaurant sauces theory, as sauces can include quite a bit of salt without actually tasting salty.

I've been requiring fewer wipes for sure. I do get color variation of brown to green-grey to almost black (not dried blood though).  Both color and texture seem to vary with my veggie intake - greens vs roots vs squash.  Also, fat source seems to impact.  More cooking oil, regardless of type makes things messier as opposed to purely fatty meat which does not impact number of wipes.

Let's be clear about how "sticky" I'm talking here. It typically requires an additional trip to the bathroom just to wipe, at some point later in the day.

Even if this IS salt related, I did not have any issues before paleo and was, most certainly, consuming far more salt.

I was consuming much more salt before paleo too.  Back then, though, the grains or whatever it was made my poop into huge conglomerated masses from which nothing could escape.

Of course, those masses were extremely difficult and painful to get out.

I've never had to go back later for the sticky stuff, but I have used half a roll of paper on the initial trip.  But like I said, I'm not certain it's salt; I've just noticed a correlation.

Ok, on a typical day when I don't bring my lunch to work, I get a "tuna salad" from the cafeteria in my building. It's basically a salad with olives, cucumber, carrots, cabbage, and a huge scoop of tuna. The tuna does have a very very thin sauce (likely mayo) with it.

Other than that, that's the worst transgression of my day. Do you think even that is enough salt? I mean the salt they probably added into the tuna.

Beside the possible salt, the mayo used in the tuna salad is most likely soy based and the tuna probably contains a gluten broth and/or soy…either of those could be possible suspect.

I honestly don't know - remember I'm not sure there's a causation here.  Based on my experience, the amount of salt in a dozen olives might do it, but I'm guessing you don't have that many olives in one tuna salad.

While this is probably correct, do you really believe that a few tablespoons of that sort of stuff would throw my digestion so out of whack?

I'm not sure what the "how much oil" refers to here. Regarding the tuna? I believe they add mayo, but very little. It doesn't seem to be enough to upset one's digestion.

I have found store-bought salads like that are often made with quite a bit of oil and sometimes HFCS as well. I know it came from the cafeteria, but might it have come from a supplier rather than being made there?  And the tuna may have been packed in oil as well, i.e. not just the mayo as an oil source.  If they do buy it from a supplier, ask to see the container.

As an update: I switched to a new multivitamin in the past month or so. I noticed a few days ago that it contains probiotics. On a whim I decided to stop taking it to see if this is related. Things have been ok so far. I will update in a few days

Ok, I usually don't talk about poop issues, but this never happened to me before. This morning is was green.  Not a bright green, but it was green. I had a salad for dinner last night. But I have salad almost every night.  I may of had a little more salad to finish off some greens that probably wouldn't last another day. But still not a huge amount. I also had blueberries.  I've had blueberries before but this was a lot more than I usually eat. If it had been blue I wouldn't of been surprised, but green?  ??? Has this happened to anyone?

Yeah, and not unusual.

You ever see horse poop from a horse that's been eating mostly grass? It's the greenish-yellow of composting grass clippings. You probably ate a LOT of greens
