Even Jesus ate grains...
« on: September 01, 2010, 10:21:56 PM »
someone said this to me today as a reason why it is okay for us to eat them too.  How the heck do I answer that one?

I said, "he also walked on water, but us normal humans can't do that."  First thing I could think of, but not really very articulate.  Of course I was told that it was comparing apples and oranges.

But, what really is a good answer?  This is to a person that is a devout Christian, so there has to be some tact.

NutMeg, you are sort of screwed.  The only answer is that cavemen were around well before JC and sometime between then and when JC walked the earth, grains were introduced.  This will not get you far but it appears to be the actual events that happened.  I would never argue that JC did not exist but it is a time line thing for me.  You will not get far with this explanation with someone who is a devout Christian.  Hey, just my opinion.....

I agree, which is why I gave my smart ass answer and then changed the subject.  I am a Christian myself, but being Catholic, we look at things differently then some other Christians.  I don't believe that the world s only 6000 years old, or that it only took 7 days to create the universe.

So, even though I may lean more towards a Designer for earth and humans, it doesn't mean that I take the bible literally, so I find discussing this stuff with people that do believe that way difficult.

Anyway, I am still interested to see if there is any type of discussion to be had.  Not sure I will have it with this person, but in case I am ever faced with it again.

My wife is a devout christian and so is her mother.
I've seen this question before.
And I'm on raw paleo.  ;D
The results speak for themselves.
Maybe they misinterpreted the "teachings."

My devout wife and our kids are almost paleo diet, except for rice.
Wheat is a bad word in our household and is totally banned.

He also spoke aramaic but I'm betting they don't, and he would not have eaten pig, would have had to wash all meat and would have had different dietary laws and religious customs, along with any number of other things that a Christian doesn't do.

You cannot use logic here - just back away.

I would say 'another good reason for not being a Christian', but that would be unpolite and typical of me.

For some Christians, it may work to tell them you're on the Garden of Eden diet.  Even according to the bible it wasn't until we were expelled that we had to start tilling the soil and raising grains.

Also, wasn't there something about God accepting the sacrifice from Abel, but not the grain sacrifice from Cain, or something like that?

Jesus wasn't a Christian! I'm presuming you're from the USA - from an outsider's point of view your fundamentalist Christians seem totally crazy.

A fitting punishment for eating the forbidden “fruit”?…very well could have been a grain and not a true fruit as we think of it.  Now that you’ve eaten it you’ll work for it kind of thing.
I believe it also gives the impression that there was no sickness or death before the forbidden fruit was eaten.  Ha, sounds like grain to me!  ;)
That might be something you’d want to look up Nutmeg and see if that’s helpful for an answer back.

I think that might just do the trick, I wonder was the forbidden fruit was indeed grain.  I mean it works for me grain was punishment, we have now used our intelligence to see the ramifications of eating it and can choose to do better now that we know better.

"And the Lord had regard for Abel and his offering; but for Cain and for his offering He had no regard"(Gen 4:4-5)

Lamb vs grain.  Not unlike this forum in that regard

I think you'd agree with the great Billy Connolly: Never trust anyone who's only got one book.

If he even existed he kept kosher.  Tell your friend no more cheeseburgers, sausage McMuffins, or pepperoni pizza.
