new in london
« on: September 06, 2010, 03:47:02 PM »
greetings cavepeople!

I'm based in London and have been on the paleo diet for the past 2 weeks.  It's been a bit of a change for me because I used to be a demi vegetarian very into her legumes and pasta and ate very little meat, only fish!  Of course I have ditched that now and am eating lamb, but have not graduated to beef yet.  Like a lot of beginners, I have lost weight on the diet mainly because without grains, I sometimes find it difficult to pack in enough calories.

Here are is a sample day - what I ate today! (feel free to paleo-rate-me)

Breakfast
boiled egg
blueberries and raspberries
green tea with jasmine
1 sardine

Snack
walnuts and macademia nuts (am I right in thinking that these are the best for 3/6 ratios?)
coconut milk

Lunch
mixed salad - rocket, lambs lettuce, carrots, mushrooms, beetroot
flaked salmon
2 slices dry cure parma ham

Snack
2 dried prunes, 1 dried fig

Dinner
Grilled lamb steaks
roast veg - courgette, broccoli, onions, garlic, parsnip, butternut squash, mushrooms
kiwi fruit
peppermint tea

I'd be interest to hear from other London-based paleo folks!  Where do you get your paleo food?  Do you do also do crossfit? Which are the best farmers markets for game meats?  Where can you buy raw milk (goat and cow) in the city? (I know it's not paleo but as a northern european who is lactose tolerant, I feel I am 'evolved' to consume it a couple of times a week).

look out for recipes, which I will be posting whenever I cook up something I think is particularly good

Welcome!  That list looks quite good.

As minor points, dried fruit is borderline - whole fruit is better - and it would be best if you could find unsalted macademias.  As I said, those are minor points, though.

I believe you're correct that those nuts have better omega 3:6 ratios than most other nuts.

thank you all for your kind welcomes!

I'm not really on the diet to loose weight, but in less than 2 weeks I've lost around 2lb and 1" off my waist.   I strongly suspect it's water weight but I don't really care, it's encouraging me to stay on the diet! (this from the girl who was nicknamed 'pasta bucket' in her youth)

Warren - luckily here in the UK most of our nuts come unsalted, including my macademias! :)  Sadly they were all out of fresh figs when I went 'gathering' in the supermarket - serves me right for going on a Sunday evening!

@vanderblairsy - I'm probably going to start going to a different farmers market every week, so I'll let you know how that goes.  Can't help you with the beef I'm afraid as I don't really eat it, but I'll keep my eyes open

tip for going properly paleo - throw out all your old foods.  Then tell all our friends you've gone paleo and no longer eat grains.  Helps.

Rocket is a nightshade

not the stuff I'm eating...wild rocket is a member of the mustard (cabbage) family and is native to Europe and Western Asia!
