I finally took the plunge
« on: February 03, 2010, 11:15:34 AM »
Hello all. I have been lurking here since around Christmastime. I found the site when I started researching paleo eating as a result of reading some stuff about the movie Fathead and saw some clips from the movie. It all makes sense when you are open to it. Sooooo..... I started trying to eat more meats and fat and less grains and legumes. I would be lying if I said I don't care about weight loss, but really I want to be healthy. I have seen my health deteriorating over the past few years and I'm sick of it. I have been visiting the forum pretty much every day since I found it, but I never joined because I didn't think I needed to say anything. Now I finally joined because I like the people here, it is a great online atmosphere, and like I said, I am now jumping in fully. I decided to eat fully paleo for the next month. I highly doubt when that month is over I will go back, but the way my mind works, I needed to make a particular goal to jump in. I lied a little.... I reserve the right to drink my daily 1-2 cups of coffee. My body may tell me to ditch it. I had my usual cup at work last night and my stomach got upset! :D... so I dumped the rest.

Ok, so this is it. I was doing paleo halfheartedly since right before Christmas, and as of yesterday, Feb. 2, 2010 I am going fully paleo (minus coffee if my body lets me).  Oh and as a side note, I have seen great improvement in my digestive problems since I started changing my eating habits. Now maybe I'll start to see some other changes,,, yaaaay!

Coffee has a habit of making me... "explode", as it were. I love the taste though, so anymore I just water it down so it's fine on me

Congrats, and welcome :)  This community is truly a great place for information & support. Be sure to ask questions, because a bunch of ppl on here are very smart and glad to help us newbies out. Good luck with the Coffee thing; I've never liked the taste, but it seems addictive to many ppl.

Welcome.  ;D

Coffee is probably one of the things to worry about last.  Get rid of the dairy, grains and legumes and you are most of the way there.

Worry about finessing the last bit of your diet once you have the big bits under control  ;)
The "Seven Deadly Sins"

• Grains (wheat/rice/oats etc) . . . . . • Dairy (milk/yogurt/butter/cheese etc)
• Refined foods (salt/sugars etc ) . . • Nightshades (peppers/tomato/eggplant)
• Tubers (potato/arrowroot etc) . . . . • Legumes (soy/beans/peas)
• Modernly palatable (cashews/olives etc)

Welcome!

I decided to eat fully paleo for the next month. I highly doubt when that month is over I will go back, but the way my mind works, I needed to make a particular goal to jump in.

Good for you.  Going cold turkey on grains, dairy, and legumes really seems to be the only way to make it stick.

Caffeine doesn't seem to cause people to backslide on the other things, as long as it isn't mixed in with nonpaleo sugar or dairy.

I think you've picked the right way to go Paleo, be strict for a month and you'll feel the positive effects far faster than those who slowly ease into it. Seeing results and feeling better tends to help keep the motivation high.
The answer to your question is 'eat more fat'.

Stop counting calories. If you are eating Paleo, there is usually no need.

If you are having weight loss issues, it'd be a good idea to start posting a detailed food journal, then everyone can help.

Thanks all for the responses... The biggest thing for me, believe it or not, is I need to get used to everyone thinking I'm weird doing this. I do feel strange cooking meat all the time. Last night I was rummaging around for snacks, not wanting to cook something, as it was late and I just got home from work,  and it was nice to see that I had a bag of pork rinds in the cupboard. Saved me from eating the corn chips, haha. Another thing with my health is my joints, I have a lot of joint pain. I am hoping to see results by cutting out nightshades, although from what I've read, it can take a very long time in some people to feel relief. I am looking forward to pain free though.  My husband recently told me to be careful... "that Atkins guy died of a heart attack or something."  I need to package the research I've done into a little easy to understand, conversational package for people when they say something. Mostly, I just say I'm watching what I eat and feel better when I don't eat certain things.

Oh yeah and the coffee thing, not sure if it's strict paleo, but I drink mine with stevia. The only ingredients in the sweetener is a concentrated and powdered form of the stevia plant and inulin soluble fiber, whatever that is. I guess I'm gonna go look that up now, since I'm thinking of it. The package says 0 Carbs, 0 Calories, and 0 Glycemic index.

Ok this link took me to a seemingly good description, I think.

On April 8, 2003, at age 72, a day after a major snowstorm in New York, Atkins slipped on ice while walking to work, hitting his head and causing bleeding around his brain. He lost consciousness and went into a coma on the way to the hospital. He spent nine days in intensive care, before dying of his injuries on April 17, 2003.[6][7]

Also all the hoo haa about how dangerous atkins is was actually due to some idiot nutritionist confusing ketosis and ketoacidosis.  Ketosis is a very natural state for the body to be in, possibly more natural than not being in ketosis.

That is a significant adjustment.  It's probably one reason why a lot of us don't tend to talk to others about our diet too much - the other being that they have all sorts of excuses not to get healthy.

I felt relief within a week or so after cutting all nightshades out.  I think what I had was early, mild osteoarthritis.

Most of us don't think of stevia as paleo, though it's not a major cheat like grains or dairy.  It should be noted that artificial sweeteners are somewhat insulinogenic even though they have 0 glycemic index, so the same probably goes for stevia.

Oh wow, thanks. I always thought he died of a heart attack too. It never seemed important enough to look into

Saved me from eating the corn chips, haha.

It's always a good idea to remove the rubbish food out of the house if you can.  We boxed up all the non-paleo food and gave it away.

Spread the word, atkins did not die of a heart attack. It was propaganda spread by who knows.
