Trav's Transformation!
« on: January 19, 2012, 08:27:11 AM »
G'day guys. My name is Travis and I'm from Australia, officially the fattest nation on the planet, and my contribution is doing nothing to ease these poor statistics.

I'm 5'10" or 179cm, weigh 202.8 lbs or 91.8kg's and my navel measures 39 inches or about 100cm. That waist to height ratio is very bad, BMI has got to be getting close to obese. I mean really???? Obese!!! Far out! All I did in my youth was play sport. Out of high school I became a bike courier or bike messenger. I was doing 80km a day on the bike, in between all the walking or running up and down buildings/malls etc. I ate whatever crap I wanted. Hot chips, coke, sausage rolls, croissant w/ ham and cheese, chips, salt and vinegar by the 200g bag in one sitting. Could never get fat if I tried and I was trying pretty hard. 7 years I was on the bike. In between I got qualified as a personal trainer, but never went into the industry.

It's now been 7 years I've been in a sedentary job and I was ok for a while. Always sitting around 79kg. Slowly I creeped up to 94kg. Last year I started HIIT and calorie restriction diet. Now that I think about it, it was very paleo friendly and I got down to 75kgs. I've been 79kg since I was about 15, so I felt really skinny. Felt healthy, but my mind was struggling at work with certain tasks which normally would be no problem. Anyway, I'm back up 92kg now and enough is enough.

I've had a gutful, literally!

So, I'm not going 100% paleo from the outset. I think going from 0 to 100 may be a set up for failure, so I'm going to go maybe 80/20 paleo. If I feel like some cheese with my salad I will have it. Things like that. Was also considering a whey protein shake on training days even though it's not paleo. It's really hard to 150 to 200g of protein with food. For me anyway.

I've pulled my calf for the second time in 6 months and it seems to always be tight. Maybe it's all these dodgy foods I've been eating for years that have kept my body inflamed and not running right. I've been aware of paleo for years now, but never given it a real long term approach. It's my time to stop being a fat slob, stop pre diabetes and all these diseases caused by the current food pyramid, and my affection for fast food.

Tomorrow we begin! This journal is to keep me accountable of my actions, even if I binge I'll try to log it.

My name is Travis and I'm a former burden on the health system!

Day 1.

Success? Kind of. Started the day with p90x, shoulder and arms. Only did half cause I'm really out of shape. Went to ikea and had those tasty meatballs and chips, so.....

Lunch was 2 eggs w/ 2 Rashers of bacon. Went to the beach with my girl and the dog, was 36 degrees today! Stayed in the ocean for about 1.5 hours. Nice! Came home did 20 mins really light on the spin bike. I don't want that calf to go again. It was like had no resistance at all. Hardly broke a sweat in this hot weather, that's how light I was going.

For dinner I had barramundi with beans (beans paleo?), watermelon, orange, rocket, spinach leaves, few almonds, 1 slice garlic bread(arrr), crumbed(arrr) calamari rings. Big dinner! Really really yummy.

Now this might not sound too paleo, but it's a huge step up for me coming from a lot of bread. This is no excuse and tomorrow it will be better and continuing to get better overall.

I'll try to get some pics up. I used to weigh in everyday and if I didn't see the scale move would get pissed off. So I might do it every few days and try not to worry too much about the figure.

Goodnight all. Thanks for reading.

Day 2.

Bloody hot night last night, so hot! Found it hard to sleep. Woke up and did about 20 mins of stretching, really focusing on my posterior chain. As silly as this sounds, I think my calf problem my be related to muscle imbalances, especially in my back and my hamstrings. They're so tight! So when I'm watching tv, might just try and do some stretching.

As for my food intake, breaky was 2 eggs and 1 bacon. Lunch I had a protein shake with water, I know, not paleo, but it's not grains either. I should make extra meat for dinner and take for lunch the next day. With lunch, also, watermelon, nuts and a few seeds, lots of capsicum and a little feta.
Dinner, check this out, bunless burger. Can you believe, BUNLESS! Can't have a burger without a bun!!! It was pretty good, well it was ok, nah.... Good. I enjoyed it and would have it again.

Might do a weigh in tomorrow. Just dont want to get bad news that my waist is just as large. Think that might be me for tonight..... To do some spin bike or not.......???

Day 3.

Great day today. Forgot to say yesterday, I was at work and my mind went walkabouts. I couldn't solve the easiest problems. Maybe I should be having more fat? I have no idea. Maybe I will just get over it when my body gets used to burning my fat stores. Have you guys had the same encounters?

On to today. I decides to do a weigh in this morning. Results are - 89.5kg/197.8. So I've lost a little. Probably water and bloat but I like seeing results and get disheartened when the scale doesn't move. So I'm quite happy today.

This morning I did kenpo x from the p90x. Was a good workout and the calf held up pretty good. Was gonna do some bike sprints tonight but decided against it. I really don't want that calf to go again. Breakfast was 2 eggs, 1 Rasher bacon. Lunch was protein shake with water, carrot, pineapple, capsicum, nuts and seeds. Dinner was a steak with roasted tomato and a beautiful salad with a bit of cheese.

I feel like I'm getting more paleo everyday. I feel good that I haven't had a coke, chips or bread in 3 or 4 days. I have had a headache for a lot of the day but I've come off coke before, so I know what to expect. It doesn't worry me.

Might go hit the bag tomorrow morning. I'm 32 now. I still think I can make the olympics in either track cycling, boxing or tennis, cause the Australian open is all I've been watching lately. I'm still holding on to these silly dreams. Ha ha. It's quite funny really. Boxers fight into there 40's right? I can still make it!!! Crazy trav with his silly fantasies. Night.

Day 4.

I couldnt help myself and i had to weigh in again. Was so happy with the weight loss, just had to jump on again. Results - 89.0kg/195.8. Pretty happy with that.Woke up today and decided against some boxing. I did some HIIT on the spin bike. Was a good solid quick workout. Probably went 85 - 90%.

Breaky - 3 eggs scrambled and an orange. Lunch - steak with veggies and butter. Some watermelon. Dinner - 3 types of salads and some spring rolls. Spring rolls not so good. Whoops.

Might not log tomorrow. I've gone and booked in a 14 hour shift! Crazy eh? Will really try not to get mcdonalds on the way home tomorrow night. Goodnight to all you cavemen and women!

Well I've been MIA! That 14 hour shift took it out of me. Came home and 24 hours of non paleo eating. Macca's, sleep, a good breakfast of eggs and bacon, rice and chicken and last night chicken and ceasar salad with 2 Croutons and a little dressing.14 hour shifts are double edged swords. Good money, but it kicks your ass! Had to get up 6 hours earlier than usual, it's a killer.

It was 41.something degrees yesterday, today is the same. I managed to do sone HIIT on the spin bike. Might do the same today.

I've been reading a lot about the primal blueprint and trying to decide if I should buy the book. I read the 10 blueprint commandments and they make sense but isn't eating paleo enough? Should I get the book? Does anyone follow the primal blueprint? I presume it's eating paleo, but with those 10 rules.
Does anyone fast? And for how long? Up to 24 hours and then annihilate food. I'm still used to eating 3 or 6 times a day.

I got an Omelette for breakfast. Happy eating!

Update for today.

Did my HIIT training on the spin bike. I went a lot harder today than yesterday, it was really good. My legs had the biggest pump and I was stuffed! Had my omelette for breakfast and then a cheese board in the arvo with a few beers, seeing as it was a public holiday. It's Australia day today, so a few beers were called for.

I'm really bloated right now. All that beer and some crackers really fill you up. Was supposed to have a roast lamb for dinner, but I'm so full I can't even imagine it right now. Guess it gonna have to be tomorrow night. Oh yeah, had some chocolate. When I drink it's so easy to get off track. Jumping back on tomorrow. I promise!! ;D

I tried 24 hour fasting once a week for about six months.  It was really difficult, made me dread Fridays, and so I gave it up.

Wow! Thanks suze. Yeah 24 hours might sound a bit long. I think 12 to 18 hours might be ok, but yeah I'll leave the 24 hr fast. Thanks for the info. I actually think not eating all day would be pretty hard especially if your doing a workout.

Today. P90x chest and back. Good workout. I've been doing p90x on and off for a while and managed 8-9 pull ups. I could only get 2 or something when I started. When I was beefcake I used to do 4 sets of 10. I'm gonna get that strength back!

Food - breakfast. 2 eggs and 3 rash bacon. Pear, orange and a few nuts throughout the day. Big dinner of roast lamb and veggies. Guess what I did... Booked another 14 hour shift! I've got roast lamb as leftover, so I want to say I'm not gonna hit the fast food. Yep, roast lamb and a simple salad.

My problem is I do really well for 4 or 5 days, then I have a few days off work and crack. Work days are easy, days off I seem to have too much time. I have a short term goal of 86.9kg. I always get to 88's and 87's but I never get into the 86's. Once I get there, I'll know I'm on my way. Long term, I would like to be in the 70's. Well, a body fat % of about 10 and it doesn't really matter what I weigh. Waist circumference of 32 inches.

Night all.

G'day guys. My name is Travis and I'm from Australia, officially the fattest nation on the planet,

The answer to your question is 'eat more fat'.

Stop counting calories. If you are eating Paleo, there is usually no need.

If you are having weight loss issues, it'd be a good idea to start posting a detailed food journal, then everyone can help.

'Anecdotal Evidence' is an oxymoron.

Thanks SJ! The 4th, even though it's 2007. We might have moved up the list a little. Anyway, I'm not doing anything to help that figure.

Day 9.

Worked 14 hours today. Food apple, orange, sandwich with ham & cheese (I was starving...), protein shake with water. Would've been a good day to start a fast, cause there was nothing to eat at work. Good news is, I came home, got some veggies cooked and had left over roast lamb. I'm really happy with myself that I didn't do a drive by through KFC. After 14 hours I always convince myself it's ok to eat that shit. So today is like a small victory for team 'paleo' and a loss for team 'binge my bloody head off'. I feel really good about dinner tonight.

Chest and lats are sore from yesterday's p90x! Might do some HIIT on the bike tomorrow morning. Night all.

Good work on the HIIT, killer for losing fat and building health. Add some heavy resistance exercises like squats and deadlifts and you'll be set.

According to that chart New Zealand is beating Oz as well! (Not the sort of stat we'd like to be ahead on, lol) You sound like a busy guy so you might like Tabata workouts. Google it. I tried them and they really kicked my butt.

Did anyone just watch the tennis? What a match! That was one of the best matches I've ever seen. Those 2 guys are warriors. Think about Nadal and djokovic battling it out next time you want to skip that last set or skip abs at the end of that workout. Warriors!!!

Hi Suze. Just looked up tabata workouts. What the he'll are they?! Are you serious? 20 sec on, only 10 sec off. That is crazy s**t! I currently do 30 sec on/1:00 or 1:30 off. I thought that was hard. I really want to give it a go, but I'll wait for a day off, so if I need to throw up or Lie down I can take 2 hours to recover if I need to. Cheers, I will let you know if I do.

Day 10.

Did kenpo x this morning. Was a good workout. I follow a few journals on caveman forum and DTSMA68 eats only twice a day sometimes 3 times and he is fit as f***! I've read eating like this is better for you rather than eating 6 times a day Like recommended by a lot of people. Will have to do a bit more research on it. So anyway, I decided to have a big breakfast and if I didn't need lunch I wouldn't have it. For breakfast I had 2 eggs, 2 rash of bacon, bunch of grapes and a protein shake with milk. I know milk! I though once a week I would have milk to get calcium. My belly was a bit sore after the shake. Then I did some research and found all these food full of calcium. Almonds! I eat almonds everyday almost. Will skip the milk from now on. Had an orange and some nuts in the arvo and then chicken and salad for dinner.

Did a weigh in this morning. 88.4kg/194.6lbs. Weight loss is coming along at a good pace. Really keen to try tabata on the spin bike.

Night all.
