I've even stopped buying dairy, Warren!

Good for you!  Now for the remaining remnants of grains and peanut butter.

Throwing out food was one of the toughest habits to develop.  It took me months before I could throw out nonpaleo foods with impunity; I really had to get used to thinking of them as nonfoods.  Now, though, I don't think of it as "going to waste" any more than I think of throwing out cardboard containers or dead insects as "going to waste".

I'll still eat it on occasion. I'm trying to go for "optimum health" and not "optimum approximation of paleo living", and to this end I believe that keeping some butter and cheese in the diet is a good way to supplement missing nutrients (See Weston A Price's "high nutrient butter" he talks about; also recent evidence of early butter/cheese eating, as most of the lactose goes 'poof'). It's also about access for me. It's very easy to go buy some 100% grassfed whole milk down the street, but much harder to get 100% grassfed beef. So buying crap beef from the store and drinking that milk is a fair tradeoff to me.

See, the difference is, I don't like to throw away most things. Even cardboard containers - I write notes and lists and things on the brown sides, so they at least get SOME use. I try not to generate much garbage. It's a hard thing to do, but when the girlfriend eats, I always end up finishing what she didn't eat. It's very hard to ween away from it, because it'd go in the garbage.

I didn't used to either.  However, the trash generated from mail ordering things is far less than the fossil fuels consumed in going out to buy them personally, unless one lives in midtown Manhattan and can buy everything within walking distance.  Once one gets used to shopping primarily on the web, throwing out cardboard becomes pretty necessary.

I live in a rather "hip" neighborhood of Chicago. Mid to late 20-somethings with their kids. Lots of kitschy shops and the like.

Across the street from me is a corner convenience store that sells fresh produce. 1 block away is a butcher (they close early, I don't go there). And about 3 blocks away is a big old Eastern European / butcher / organic / hip grocery store that is awesome - grass fed meats, "Hungarian style mackerel", lox, borscht, etc. I have lots of options.

You ever think of recycling the cardboard?

Actually I do recycle it.  I don't recycle the dead insects, though.

Where I live in Canada, if you throw out things that can be either recycled or composted you get a fine from the City.  It's amazing how very little garbage you put out when you compost and recycle!

Went to the Greek restaurant at which I'm having my wedding reception, so some of the food was a cheat.
Cheats: Tues, Feb 23, 2010
1 small piece of bread - for sopping up the last of the egg lemon soup
2 medium filo dough meat pies
the sauce on the lamb&artichoke meal I got was very salty and probably not paleo
1/2c baked custard dessert (I don't know the greek word)

I'm up by 1lb today, and while it's a normal fluctuation, it may be related to all the processed grains during this meal

5oz 86% dark chocolate
I also broke my fast early because I got some mail-order pemmican, but that's a half cheat
1 serano pepper? Half cheat (nightshade)

Went out for Mexican food, so I ended up eating:
~10 tortilla chips (with guacamole)
~1.5c of beans - a half cheat in my book; it's still a whole food
couple bites of quesadilla (cheese + tortilla)

I'm up a bit on the weight scale from yesterday. I've noticed drastic swings depending on the quality of my nightly meal.

1c of fried rice
