J's journal
« on: January 15, 2010, 10:32:01 AM »
After being kinda unhappy with the changes i've made to my body in the last year or so i've been looking in to different options for eating and exercising, and i seem to keep ending up looking at caveman / paleo diets every so often.   So i finally decided to give it a try, and started as of last night.

I'm a 31 year old with too many years spent in the gym lifting heavy stuff, with results that have tailed off over the last *cough* years.  Well i decided this year was a make or break year for committing so much effort so minimal results.

On top of that i'm fed up of feeling tired and run down so often, and from what i've read paleo can help with that too.

Oh and importantly i love eating meat :D

I'm planning to keep track of changes in my body as i go along on this too.

So the first meal, last nights dinner was a whole rotisserie chicken as the supermarket had then on offer :D

Today

Breakfast 1

2 quarter pound beef burger
2 apples

Breakfast 2
2 pieces of bacon
1 egg

We have a friday tradition at work of having a cooked breakfast :)  and i know bacon is a bit of a grey area it's my first day so :P

Lunch
Raw celery and carrots
30g nuts

Dinner
The best bit, a pound of trimmed pork belly, which i'm munching on now :)

As i adjust and get food supplies more sorted will probably shift to a heavily meat based diet, and just eat when needed rather than following strict breakfast, lunch, dinner.

Day 2

Well that's the second day almost down, loving the simplicity of this way of eat.  Had planned to walk to get my food shopping done today (gathering :) ) but needed to catch up on some sleep so didn't have time.

Also discovered the CRON-o-Meter today :)
Pre shopping snack - 8:00
Chicken, roasting, meat only, cooked, roasted   20g
(left over from Friday night)
Apples, raw, with skin                           1 medium

Breakfast - about 9:30

Beef, ground, 80% lean meat / 20% fat    90g
Egg, whole, raw, fresh                           4 large

Lunch - 13:00
Fish, trout, rainbow, farmed                   274g

snack - not sure when it was
Carrots, raw                                  1 medium

Dinner - 19:00
Chicken, roasting, meat and skin             2 lbs
Apples, raw, with skin                           1 medium

Limes, raw                                           0.25   fruit
used in a few pints of water to add some flavour

Quite surprised that i got close to recommended about of vitamins and minerals of this, another bonus if you believe in RDAs

Also cooked out some pork fat to store and kept the chicken fat that came out of cooking the legs, added some garlic and chilli to this to add some more flavour.

Someone brought cake to work today, somehow managed to resist :)

Also am starting to notice a shift in when i'm hungry.  Eating breakfast this morning was difficult as i wasn't particularly hungry, but felt i needed to as was off to the gym.  and between now (midday) and then (6:30am) have only had a small piece of beef and am now just getting hungry.  This is very different to how things used to be, when post workout i'd need another meal within 30 minutes to an hour.   Liking this :)

Don't feel that you have to put food in, if you don't feel like it.

I usually workout without having food for about 20 hours beforehand.  I then eat about 2 hours after working out.
Working out in a fasted state is supposed to help increase HGH levels  ;D

But it is great to go as long as you want without feeling the overwhelming desire to eat all the time.  It means you can choose when you eat and it's easy to hold off until later if you don't have any good food available.

*good job passing on the cake  ;)

• Modernly palatable (cashews/olives etc)

I guess i just need to reprogram my brain a little to listen for when i'm actually hungry, which seems to be more difficult than it should be.  And the extra HGH would be a good side effect.

Yeah not having to eat will be a good benefit in the coming weeks as i'm about to start traveling lots with work, but have a big tub of homemade jerky ready to go :)

Day 3

Breakfast - 0630
Egg, whole, raw, fresh                                4 large

Was hard work eating these, so tomorrow may just listen to body and not have breakfast if i don't feel i need it :S

Post training - 930
As i said in earlier post this was much later after training than i'd normally eat, and a lot less

Beef, brisket                                              Small piece

Lunch - 13:00
Beef, brisket                                              1 lb - small piece above

again this was later than i'd normally eat.

Later i snacked on a couple of bits of carrot and some celery but wasn't really hungry

Dinner - 19:00
Ok have really had anything yet except an apple so will update this later, if i get hungry :S
Edit:   Roast Pork belly                                  1/2 lb eaten about 20:00

Lemon, raw                                                   1/4
used in some water again

Am starting to understand why so many of the other food journals i've read have people only eating 1 or 2 meals a day in them, this is so totally against what i've done for the last too many years, when it's been maybe 4,5 or even 6 small meals a day to keep the metabolism high and help build muscle.  Maybe all that is b/s and the human body is smarter than people think, it certainly didn't help me add much muscle over the last few years.

Day 4
Breakfast - 0600
2 eggs
1 apple

Had precooked a load of eggs, but although i felt hungry when i woke up after eating a small fraction of it i felt full, so grabbed an apple for the drive and headed out to the gym / work

lunch 1300
7 chicken drumsticks

Again i didn't need food straight after training :S
Considering the schedule i have in the next couple of weeks this is a good thing, as may end up living on eating before work and then again in the evening (trying to stop thinking breakfast and dinner as just need to eat when i'm hungry )

Will post what i eat later, if i do eat again at some point.  May well be tomorrow is it's Jodo and Iaido night tonight :)

Edit:
Did have something else to eat, but have only just got to internet to be able to post

Dinner
Did end up having dinner
4  - ¼ lb beef patties

Also finished of the pork rinds (scratchings) :D  that were left over from the lard making experiment when I got back from my martial arts classes

Didn’t mention it but when I was cooking up the beef patties on Monday evening I snacked on some of the raw ground beef, it was tasty

Wednesday

Ok today was first day of being away with work from the next week and a half, and I did pretty well with eating all things considered.  Had my first meal about 12:00 and felt ok leading up to that, just hungry (not a bad thing), with none of the usual light headedness or irritability that would usually come with not having eaten (or drunk) much.  I know I should have drunk more but the expected 2.5 hours journey took 5 due to a bit of snow.

12:00
6 chicken legs

19:00
1 apple
10 large prawns
Small amount of salad (carrot, onion and lettuce)
8oz sirloin steak
1 onion ring
Considering my steak was delivered with onion rings and chips (fries) I thing I did pretty good, although was annoyed with myself when I got back to hotel room that I  had the onion ring

19:30
Well that lot didn’t leave me feeling full so
Beef jerky – was originally about ½ beef before it got dried out

Have spent the evening making up for my poor water consumption, and am now up to 2 litres, which is well below what I’d normally have.

Hoping I can find a better main meal tomorrow evening

having to write these on laptop and will post later, as dumb hotel doesn’t have free internet and work won’t spring for it.  Could have used mobile (cell) but forgot the lead to be able to use it as usb modem

Thursday

8:15am
After workout
1 apple
3 eggs

midday
Beef jerky – equivalent of 1lb of steak.  Now running low on this only have ½ a meals worth left :S  plan is to make more at the weekend while is visit the GF if I get time

18:30
4 chicken wings
10oz Ribeye steak
Salad (carrot, lettuce, beetroot)
2 onion rings

Another restaurant meal that I sorta survived, need to start asking for none of the side bits that come with my meals, because then I can’t eat them.  Although  yet again I resisted the chips (fries).  I now feel seriously full.  Another plus, long day at work with few breaks and no headache, even with too many hours staring at a computer screen…. Definitely liking that benefit of eating like this.

Friday

7:00
3 scrambled eggs

13:00
Beef jerky – equivalent of ½ steak

20:00
1lb ground beef
1 egg (cooked in the beef fat)

Long day today, but food was good, surprisingly with so little food until this evening didn’t have any hunger related problems.

It looks like you are doing swimmingly even though you aren't home to make all the things you want. Great job and welcome to the forum and this WOE!  I love it. I know I've slowly begun to realize what the different between hunger and thirst is.. I think a lot of people mistake them. So many don't drink nearly enough water and/or replace water with diuretics. (coffee, soda, alcohol)

still struggling with knowing when i feel hungry, so making myself wait until i know i am really hungry before eating, which seems to work.

Saturday
13:00
1/2 lb ground beef (cooked rare)
1 raw carrot
1 onion cooked along with the beef in the beef fat
1 apple

and that's it so far today, although there will be more come the evening, most likely more ground beef as that's kinda all i got sorted whilst staying with GF this weekend.  She is being very supportive about the different w.o.e, although we had a slight disagreement about 'breakfast being the most important meal of the day'   oh well sure she'll see it's doing me good as the weeks go by

18:00
1 ground beef (cooked rare)
1 carrot
1 onion
1 tin chopped tomatoes
some mixed herbs

all cooked up together.  GF was slightly annoyed with me saying, 'but i wont be hungry when you wanna have dinner' so i had this a bit earlier than planned but hey i got through another day away from home :D

Monday
8:00
apple       1  - felt I needed something

12:00
‘Chicken drumsticks’      7

Ok yet again I’m away with work, so I picked up some pre-cooked chicken from the supermarket for lunch.  Was expecting these to be pretty rough, but initially they sorta tasted ok.. until I began to pick up the ‘this isn’t just chicken’ feeling.  Checked the ingredients, expecting to see just chicken, little did I know:
Chicken drumsticks, water! Stabilizers, other crap
Well I was kind of stuck, that’s all I had with me to eat and I was hungry so I eat them, big mistake, within an hour or so have gas and stomach discomfort.  So lesson learnt, check the ingredients before you buy it.  Thinking tomorrow I’ll just hit the hotel breakfast hard on the things I can eat then hold out until the evening

15:00
Innocent fruit smoothie

19:30

Chicken breast skewer   2
Fillet steak skewer      2

These were good, although did have some seasoning on 

T-bone steak         18oz
Green beans         ~10
Carrots            maybe ½

Ok the steak was awesome, as thick as my wrist and nice and bloody inside.  Forgot that beans are a no-no.   Also I’m getting better at ordering food, this time asked them to leave off the chips (fries)

Not the best of days today, but learnt a few things so

Also checked my body weight this morning, down 4.9kg (~11lbs) for the year and 2.1kg (4.5lbs) since starting Paleo 9 days ago.  Also my waist is down 5/8 inch.  Hoping that as my body stabilizes I’ll get more of an appetite, as I’m not looking to drop massive amounts of weight.   On the plus side most of the weight lost seems to be water / fat as my strength levels are still increasing.

Update: there was defiantly a lot of salt on the meal, I can feel it, time for lots of water to flush out my system… gggggrrrrrr

Tuesday
07:00
Eggs – 4
Bacon – 4 slices
Orange juice – large glass

To avoid yesterdays issues with ‘chicken’ I hit the hotel breakfast, I know bacon isn’t truly paleo but it didn’t give me any problems and I’ve felt much better today.

13:00
Apple  1
Sunflower seeds – 10g
Pumpkin seeds – 10g

17:30
Beef patties – 4 1/4lbers
Carrot – 1 medium
Broccoli – 75g

The Carrot and Broccoli were stir fried

Lime – ¼ in glasses of water

I seem to have done much better today on the micro nutrient front according to CRON-o-Meter.

All a bit rushed so hopefully not too many typos

Wednesday

07:00
Trout -  150g
Eggs - 2 fried in lard

13:00
Sunflower seeds - 10g
Pumpkin seeds - 10g

20:00
king size prawns - ~ 12
lettuce - a little bit

Rib-eye steak - 12 oz

Orange juice - about 300ml

pretty good day.  Yesterdays stir-fried veg repeated a little, so may avoid those i future and stick to the raw carrots, i seem to be ok with those.  Also think i need to cut down on the juice
