He went to stay with his mother a few days ago and had lots of pasta - which resulted in painful bloating (I got the blame!).

Now that's unfair!  I hope the blame was only from his mother and not from your son.

no - he definitely sees the sense in it. He wants to work in the physical education field, so it's interesting for him. He's also going to start at the same karate school as I am.

Yesterday we had entrecôte from my main butcher's best grass fed beef - at 19€/kg it's an expensive protein/fat source, but it was delicious and very tender. I cooked it very quickly in a little tallow from the same animal then, while it was resting, I fried up some chard in the juices. We followed that with some grapes.

In the evening we had more langostinos, green salad, then chicken wings - the dog also had raw wings. He's been suffering a bit during his transition to his new diet. The fish so early on was a mistake I think!

Today we have monkfish liver (6€/kg) and cuttlefish (6€/kg) - they will be cooked with garlic and parsley. I've also bought some endive, lettuce, new season apples, some of the flat peach things and some small pinkish grapes that have a raspberry taste.

I wish every market in every town in America would have unique food choices that you have in Spain. You have to drive to find unique foods.

I only really know the UK and Spain - and in terms of food shopping, I know Spain better. Whenever I'm asked why I live in Spain, food is often the first thing I mention. The food culture here is very strong - even with young adults I can have serious lengthy conversations about food - perhaps discussing the merits of different fruit varieties or the differences between Macdonalds burgers and the home made burgers from a good local bar.

In the 15 years I've lived here though I can see the increase in obesity - especially among children.

Yesterday's monkfish liver and cuttlefish were great - although there was too much of it, one or the other with the salad would have been enough. The dog ended up having some of the liver with his raw wings. In the evening we had more chicken wings - I usually grill them on a cast iron grill but this time I decided to fry them in tallow = mmmmmmmum.

Today we had a leg of lamb cut into chops and fried in tallow for lunch (9€/kg), with green salad and grapes to follow, in the evening it was asparagus fried in tallow with bacon and fried eggs. The bacon (panceta) is salted, un smoked - it was way too salty for my newly refined taste buds.

The dog had an adventurous day's eating - lunch of the end of the lamb's leg (without eating the bone) and a pig's tongue and an evening meal of a pig's vertebrae and a pig's lung - all the pig stuff was extremely cheap.

This morning - I'm happy to report - a perfect number 4 on the BSS http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bristol_Stool_Scale

I'm equally happy to report that this morning the dog produced a perfect number 3 - hopefully that's him settled into his natural diet.

Today's human and dog shopping for the weekend was - beef mince for burgers, lamb ribs and neck for stew, sausages, 2 pig's trotters split down the middle - half a trotter each for me, the kids and the dog, pig's ear for the dog, pig liver for everyone, turnips, parsnips, onions, asparagus and the usual salad and fruit.

My daughter and I had sausage, panceta and fried egg for lunch - at the same time I cut off some raw liver for the dog and cut some small pieces to cook up for myself (my daughter has always said she doesn't like liver). When we sat down to eat she looked at my plate and asked why she didn't have any of "that stuff" - "Liver?" I said - "here try some" - so she did and said it was fine - nothing special but she wanted more.

Over the weekend we had a few good fry ups with various combinations of panceta, liver, eggs, sausages, burgers - we had a friend round on Sunday for the lamb, turnip and parsnip stew, which was delicious.

Yesterday we had the pigs trotters for starters at lunch time - my daughter wasn't too impressed but at least she had a go, my son and I ate ours but there wasn't much eating on them. They were followed by yet another fry up - the kids had tinned beans with theirs - I'll have to do something with my cupboard full of neolithic foodstuffs! (and then I don't know what I'll put in the cupboard).

In the evening we had chicken wings fried in tallow and palm oil - when they were done I put them aside and fried some chopped panceta in the same fat then added a good bunch of spinach and quickly wilted it.

We also had grapes and oranges and my son and I had a carrot and beetroot juice with ginger and coconut oil - the beetroot was pretty good raw - I think I'll start using it in salads.

I had a couple of fried eggs for breakfast for a change - I'm getting up at 7.30 every day and going out with the dog - some days I've had some very fatty chorizo sausage, a bit salty unfortunately but then I think I'm getting salt every time I swim in the sea or eat mussels.

Went to market and got horse ossobucco, horse liver, horse jamon (raw horse ham made in the same way as the famous Spanish Iberico hams), pigs tongue, pigs kidneys, mussels, chard and fruit.

Lunch was the germ (pun intended) of an idea for a new recipe - Onions sweated in coconut oil, add fresh coconut milk, then the cleaned fresh mussels and steam them open - serve with chopped coriander leaves. I might try it with a bit of chopped pineapple as well.

This was followed by some horse liver (unfortunately a bit overdone) cooked in tallow with savoy cabbage added towards the end.

Off out now to an Argentine place for their homemade burger with all the fried eggs and bacon etc - but without the bread!

Yesterday we had the horse ossobucco stewed with onions and garlic and served with chard cooked in tallow and some of the stew stock - in the evening we had pigs kidneys and salad. The dog had kidneys as well.

Today we went to market and got some horse meat and turnips for a stew for tomorrow, we also got a mixed bag of horse meat scraps for 1,75€/kg for the dog, half a beef heart at 2€/kg, a local fish called Sargo (Diplodus sargus sargus), some shell fish that we've never tried before - can't remember the name but here's a pic http://www.pixmac.es/picture//000014189311, some spinach, rocket, lettuce and a little fruit.

Lunch was the fish and shellfish with salad - it seems strange to cook fish in beef tallow but it works, delicious! Evening meal was the beef heart fried in tallow then kept warm while I fried/grilled some asparagus and celery in the same pan and finally some chopped spinach was wilted in the remaining fat.

This was the first time we'd had heart and we both (son and I) loved it - when I went to feed the dog from the mixed bag of horse meat I pulled out a big piece of horse heart - it looked pretty tasty as well - I would have happily had it myself.

Fruit today was a small bunch of grapes and 2 apples.

Yesterday for lunch we had tripe to start (I simmered it for a couple of hours then dried it in the sun then fried it in tallow until it was crisp) it was pretty good - think I'll introduce some curry style spices next time. This was followed by mackerel cut into slices across the way and fried in the same fat (mackerel is a great fish to use with spices as well) - we also had a green salad and some grapes.

While I was cooking lunch I was preparing the evening meal - this was horse meat, beef heart and turnip stew, with onions, garlic and Jamaican style curry spices - the classic Jamaican curry is curried goat - this was similar but with horse and heart. The cheap cuts of horse take a good 3 hours of slow cooking to tenderise nicely. I'm looking into a solar oven for this kind of dish.

So - we had the stew at night with some spinach wilted in tallow. I've been telling various people about what I'm eating - it wasn't long ago in Spain that all children were given Spanish omelette made with brain and a dish including liver, kidney, heart, lung....

Sadly times are changing fast here - each step in the destruction of any semblance of a healthy diet seems to begin in the USA, move first to the UK then to other European countries (I can only comment from a European point of view). Spain has resisted, and is still resisting - my city has a population of around 350,000 and only has one MacDonalds in the centre - a couple of drive ins in the suburbs. It's only been in the past year or so that I've noticed ready made meals tucked away in a corner of the supermarket - in the UK there are huge aisles filled with nothing else.

I'm going to be without children for a day or two so I've decided on a 24 hour fast - 10pm Friday night was my last meal so I'll plan a nice big fatty meal for tonight!

I've also included a torso pic - there is a clear improvement since the last pic (page 3 but taken when I started paleo 8 weeks ago)

The 24 hour fast went well - I felt some hunger around 3pm but nothing serious. At 10 pm I had 2 rib eye steaks (with bone in) and a fried egg with some chard and then I had more or less the same meal 3 times on Sunday!

Yesterday I bought a big grey mullet and I used most of it to make a stew with root veg and a red pepper - we had that for lunch then I had the rest of the fish fried on palm oil at night.

Just me and the dog for the weekend - he's settled into his cavedog diet. I made the mistake of giving him too much variety at first but now he's producing perfectly inoffensive dry little stools. He's been eating chicken, tongue, pig's feet, ribs, pig's penis (with plenty of meat attached) and a big fish head and fish roe yesterday. I'm going to try him on heart again tonight. I reckon it's costing me 2-3€ per day to feed him, which compares very well with commercial food.

Market shopping today for the 2 of us included - 1 beef heart, some liver, a meaty chicken carcass, some beef ribs, pigs foot, turnips, parsnips, carrots, onions, grapes, pears and bananas.

I had bacon and egg for breakfast - lucas had half a pig's foot. Then I made a  big root veg curry which I'll use over the weekend with various meals. Lunch was plenty of fried liver with the curry - tonight it will be heart with curry.... etc

Food wise things are more or less as before - I've been buying a fish called Melva in Spanish (Auxis rochei rochei) - a blue fish in the tuna family - it's very cheap - usually only 2 euros a kilo and is easy to fry in tallow and have with a salad. Generally I don't find this way of eating to be expensive - I'm saving a fortune on evoo and buying the cheaper, fattier cuts of meat and offal.

I realised that I'd been over doing the fruit - gorging on it in fact - so this weekend, again with no kids, I bought a leg of lamb cut into chops and more or less just had that with fried eggs several times - and then a horse rib and root veg stew on Sunday night with my son. Horse ribs are half the price of horse ossobucco and are great stewed - I really must get a solar oven sorted out.

I feel thinner and more energetic after the low fruit weekend - my only cheat is still beer - but never more than a litre and usually less.

Today, after 3 months of paleo style eating, I finally cleared out all the neolithic stuff from my cupboards. I now have lots of tinned fish in it, along with some olive oil and a big tupperware filled with iberico sausage and chorizo. These are made from the iberico pigs that are free to forage under the oak trees - the ingredients show them to be fairly pure, a small amount of milk protein and lactose (but listed after oregano) so I'm going to keep them around for snacks (and the kids love them).

fish day today - I got a bonito cut into slices (head and tail for lucas) and some chard - I'm going to grind up some curry spices, dip the fish in it then fry them in tallow. I'm getting my grass fed tallow free from the market - it's great stuff - I love how it can be reused or incorporated into stews.

Tonight we have 2 kilos of mussels between the 3 of us - I'll do them with coconut oil, onion and parsley and we'll have a green salad. Generally I'm making the effort to have more fish - mainly blue fish, sardines, mackerel, bonito, grey mullet.

I've been drinking a lot less (and have decided to stick to wine when I do) - about once a week and feel better for it. I think I'm addicted to fruit though! I've had no problem with bread, even if it's in front of me, or rice, or pasta - but once I start on fruit I find it hard to stop. We're in mandarin season now and I get a kilo or 2 in every day for the kids with the idea of having a couple myself - I can't usually stop at 2 though. I'm not concerned about weight but I think it causes me to have lethargic crashes.

Talking of weight - everyone I meet comments on how thin I am since they last saw me - strange how many people associate thinness with ill health, when I've never felt healthier. A few women have said I'm less attractive now - I suppose a more filled out face is subconsciously associated with wealth.
