What's the best way to build reps?
« on: July 21, 2010, 02:00:08 PM »
Suppose I'm happy with how strong I am, say with respect to pushups, but I want to be able to do more repetitions.  What's the best way to do that?  More frequent exercise?  Increase the resistance?  Something else?

I learned how to do pullups with a "grease the groove" method. I went from 0 to 1 to 5 to 10 using this. The theory is simple. Do small amounts of reps every chance you can - never fatigue yourself, never get tired.

For pullups, I put a bar in my bathroom doorway. I set a rule - every time through that doorway, I would (attempt) 1 pullup. I started with negatives (jump and lower yourself as slow as possible). I didn't care about form or anything. I just did 1, every time.

To clarify, Phrakture, you went from 5 to 10 pullups by just doing them one at a time?  You must have been able to test that you could do 5, or 10, right?  How often did you test that?

It's a rough estimate. Based on how I felt after doing a single pullup. I didn't regularly test it, no, but upon completion of one, I felt like "I can do X more of these". The 10 is what I can do now (well, I could do a wee bit more, but 10 is a good round number) without form getting all sloppy.

It's actually not that different from EDT concepts. It's about getting the most number of reps in during a given period of time. The more reps you do, the more you'll be able to do. EDT is just a shorter time span

You need to get stronger. To do more work, you need to get stronger.

Density training, like Phrakture suggested.

Is this the proper term? I've heard: Consolidation Training, High-Set Training, Grease The Groove, and now Density Training. Stupid fitness and it's 7 million terms for everything

The goal is to increase the workload within a given amount of time. That's increasing density. Like trying to fit 2.25 gal. of sand in a 2 gal. bucket.

Density training, like Phrakture suggested.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding one or the other, but it seems to me that what Phrakture is advocating is very different from density training.  I take Phrakture to be saying what matters is, say, the number of pushups one does per day, even if one does them one at a time in an unstructured way, while I take density training to mean doing a structured exercise session, maybe twice a week, that consists of a fixed number of repetitions divided into a decreasing number of sets of increasing number of repetitions.

Warren what do you do?

I currently do a single set of as many repetitions as I can on a very irregular basis - sometimes on consecutive days, sometimes skipping weeks.

Both work. I don't know the science behind it, but doing N pushups per day will allow you to do N+1 pushups at some day in the future. If I recall, it has something to do with training the central nervous system to optimize for a repetitive task...

That is still increasing workload in a specific amount of time. It's just longer than a 20 min. PR Zone.

Successful increase in workload, strength, etc.. comes with consistency. That's #1.
