the ohly six exercises you'll ever need
« on: February 03, 2007, 08:12:31 PM »
i've been using this exercise program on and off for over a year and find it very beneficial and productive.  seems to be based on basic moves that our ancestors might have found to be useful and necessary.   http://myfitnessjournal.blogspot.com/2006/01/mj-only-six-exercises-youll-ever-need.html

Great first post!

This is very similar to the workouts I've been trying to do.  I'm going to save a copy of that blog post for future reference.

When I went back to save a copy, I noticed that there was a link to an article from a magazine.  Then I saw that the article was co-written by Lou Schuler and I realized why I liked this so much.

Lou Schuler is the co-author of a book that I've been using to guide my workouts.  I highly recommend this book:

The blog seems to have been removed; can anybody summarize what these six exercises were?

I was hoping more for MN: "The final goal of physical education is to make strong beings. In the purely physical sense, the Natural Method promotes the qualities of organic resistance, muscularity and speed, towards being able to walk, run, jump, move quadrupedally, to climb, to keep balance, to throw, lift, defend yourself and to swim."

I would imagine that both the bench press and squat would help you push objects like boulders.

have you ever seen an ape lift objects using the back of its neck ?  didn't think so.

I've also never seen an ape cook and eat cow meat, wear shoes, watch TV, or type. But that doesn't all of the sudden invalidate all these things. If your squatting is "lifting using the back of the neck", then you're doing it wrong. It's lifting using the whole body. The necessity of resting the bar where it rests is solely a function of how we created barbells.

This is what a kettlebell squat looks like:

you only need 3:

1 - clean
2 - standing shoulder press
3 - chin up

squats are garbage - they are completely unnatural.  have you ever seen an ape lift objects using the back of its neck ?  didn't think so.  use deadlifts instead.

bench press is even worse.  the most unnatural exercise of all.  have you ever seen BENCHES in the wild ?  didn't think so.

There are few exercises that I would call unnatural or "unpaleo", most of which involve machines.

Who says we never squatted weight?  Jumping is basically squatting but more explosive, and surely through our evolution some cavedudes must have thrown a log on their back and carried it around or been all "hey look man, I can kneel down and stand up with this on my back, bet you can't!!"

Same with bicep curls, it's not like we never picked up rocks or other heavy objects and lifted them in a bicep curl like motion.

I would think that the big difference between the exercises a lot of people do in a gym now compared to what we probably did 100,000 years ago is that our exercises now tend to be much more linear and controlled.

Weight goes up, weight goes down, usually with the help of supporting bars or other mechanisms that limit side to side movement etc.  The weights are usually extremely
balanced too.

It pobably wasn't like that back in the Paleolithic days.

The most paleo exercise would be walking/running. Or shagging.
The answer to your question is 'eat more fat'.

Stop counting calories. If you are eating Paleo, there is usually no need.

If you are having weight loss issues, it'd be a good idea to start posting a detailed food journal, then everyone can help.

'Anecdotal Evidence' is an oxymoron.
