More bang or my buck?
« on: September 06, 2010, 10:50:27 PM »
We need something to do pull-ups on.  I was thinking of getting an over the door pullup bar, but I wonder if a Power Tower would be better.  We have a heated garage, so I would be able to use it in the winter too.

I like the Power Tower for the ab work on can do on there.

Which would you suggest?

You can do ab work from a standard pullup bar (hanging knee and leg raises). Doorway pullup bars are great and cheap, but I myself am debating getting a power tower for the sole reason that it would allow me to have a full extension for pullups and leg raises. I live in an apartment, so can't really install anything.

I'd suggest the doorway bar for starters. Unless you're pretty dedicated, the power tower may be overkill

Power tower... not just for pullups and ab work but mainly for the ability to do dips.  You can build a tremendous physique with just squats, pullups and dips.

If you're in the UK, this is an awesome doorway bar:

My experience is towers take up way to much room and the width reach can be limiting.
I have a perfect pull up brand bar now that came with extras, and I like it much better than the tower I had.  I have a small entry just inside the door going in to my exercise room so I attached 2x4’s to the walls, then mounted the hardware to that. So it’s actually in the room, not just a doorway.  The bar itself can be taken off and on in a snap.  Which ever way you go keep in mind that a full bar rather than left and right grips is VERY handy if you’re not a large person with a wide reach!

You can do dips with a movable pullup bar too. Mine came with 3 sets of brackets, so I have one up high and another installed around waist height.

We are leaning towards a power tower because of my hubby.  He is pretty tall at 6'3" and we thought it would be better for him.  Hopefully we can find one locally since I don't think they will ship one here.

Actually since he is currently over 300 lb, it looks like the over the door pull-up bars aren't an option anyway.  Will the towers be okay for his size?

I think you are talking of a Power Rack...They do have weight limits but I think that is for the weights you place on them and not the person using them.  If a power tower is something else, then never mind...

You may need to look into it Nutmeg, when looking around for a power rack recently I did notice expensive power towers with 200kg capacity.

No, a "power tower" is the generic term for those big pullup/dip stations

Looks like the Weider 200 allows up to 300 pounds, so he would have to lose a little weight first, about 10 pound or so which is doable.

Hmm tried finding the 200kg model I was taking about.. couldn't but a quick google search under 'commercial power tower' comes up http://forum.bodybuilding.com/archive/index.php/t-6459801.html Body solid apparently rated to 800Ib

must say without looking around at price this one 'looks' a nice solid unit!!!

At that price, you'd be better off buying a power rack with the pullup/dip attachments, a bench and barbell set.  craigslist often has good prices on that equipment.

Yes. A cheap power rack and an Oly weight set are all you really need. The rest is fluff.
