exercise recommendations post and pre multiple surgeries
« on: July 30, 2010, 02:57:51 PM »
as above-my context is post severe auto accident last year. worked about a year post. have had 1st of 3 ortho repair surgeries. repair of torn labrum,rotator cuff and clavicular/scapular resection rt side. need labral and maybe cuff repair lt. will need carpal tunnel repair and repair of disrupted suspension arthroplasty lt hand. had the lt hand repaired due to arthritis 5 days before accident. so,my upper body/shoulder girdle are going to be useless and out of the picture for up to a year. my exercise plan is going to revolve around walking + whatever else i can come up with. 63 y.o. deconditioned with extensive weight training experience in past (15 years at a guess since i have been in good gym shape by conventional measures). any ideas,input,suggestions? thanks.

WOW! You've got a lot on your plate.

I'll just list possible exercises;

walking

Bodyweight squats, lunges and step ups.

Tabata intervals on stationary bike

Deep water running

walking against current (creek or stream) with a pole in good hand for balance

sled drags with hip/waist harness

Hip belt squats

Walking isn't exercise, it's locomotion!

I'm not sure of the quality of the joints at this point, but I always run with the idea that the body responds to stresses. In this case, you'd want to "stress" your injured joints to help them out, just not too much.

Pushups against a wall (stand far and lean in), slow and controlled, are very easy on the shoulders, but also good for them. You can do the same with with pullups in a door frame (stand close and lean back). Both of those might be good to help recondition your shoulders. As always, if it hurts, stop.
