The Latest Manipulation from the Food Industry: Nanoparticles
« on: September 06, 2010, 10:46:15 AM »
Particles are being put in packaged food to make it, safer (anti-microbial nanoparticles embedded in packaging), tastier (nanoparticle flavorings that are more accessible to the taste-buds) and healthier (nanoparticle vitamins that can bypass the stomach and intestines and go directly into the body), proponents claim. But, like GMO, food companies are sneaking these, unlabeled and untested, into our food supply.

Here is a Reuters article on it:

Here is a neutral site on it:
http://www.understandingnano.com/column-food.html

Here is a skeptical pdf that explains in detail:

Thanks for the article. I don't mind the technology but I do want all substances coming in contact with anything I consume to be labelled.

Nano has great potential for medicine, and I think perhaps in vitamin delivery to certain populations (starving refugees, famines, etc.)My suscreen has it (minerals) and I don't mind, but it DOES need long-term studies.

I agree that there could be many benefits to this technology. It's the corporations' insistence on using the general public as guinea pigs that I have serious issues with. These are going to be the GMOs of the 2010's.

Also I object to using this to enhance the flavor of crappy, processed food; which will make it even more addictive than it already is.

I come from the land of Monsanto (Saint Louis, Missouri, USA).  Speaking out against GM foods here is heresy.  I was at a party with some food scientists, i.e. grad students working as research interns at Monsanto and they were insistant that genetically modifying food is no different than what humans have been doing for 10,000 years except in a more sophisticated way.  Never mind that people never hybridized plants with animal or bacterial DNA until the likes of these guys were at it. And I said as much to them, however, now that I am eaing paleo, I do see their work as a direct extension of the agricultural revolution.

I lived across the street from a hippy scientist (multiple degrees) and he said there are many other people in his field with concerns about GMO and nano technology in our food supply. He's opposed to it completely. I like cross-breeding by botanists for heartier or more healthful veggies, but don't want fish DNA in my brussel sprouts. Food labels are awful, and controlledby the food industry. Money talks, period.

More heresy:

Monsanto is a chemical company, not an agricultural company. GMO's were developed so more chemicals that they sell can be sprayed on them and they won't die--that's all.

True that.  Additionally, mandmade fertilizer companies were originally explosive or military supplies companies.  Petro-chemical industrial complex = military industrial complex = agricultural industrial comples.  Someone call Max Headroom.
