Most and least friendly ethnic cuisines
« on: August 31, 2010, 03:02:43 PM »
Found this neat poll/article searching #paleo posts on Twitter!

Quote
Results are in for least and most paleo-friendly ethnic cuisines.  Lots of votes -- thank you.

No surprise for the clear winner of least paleo: Italian.  With all that pasta, bread, bread sticks, pizza, and breaded meats, it's hard to avoid grain, gluten, and a big insulin spike.  Maybe I shouldn't have chosen Olive Garden for our next paleo meetup.  Chinese and Mexican aren't far behind.  Favorite write-in: Tasmanian.

There are really two winners for most paleo ethnic cuisine: Barbeque and Brazilian.  More proof that the ideal paleo meal is meat on a stick.  Greek and Japanese are runners up.  Have a look at the results, and then I'll give you my observations below...

How about eskimo / inuit?

Traditional diet is just:

- Blubber / Fat
- Meat
- Internal Organs
- Berries in the summer
- High meat / burried meat as delicacy

Any of those people in the very cold climates.

I'm on Raw Paleo diet but I have kids to feed on cooked paleo diet.

I see Greek scores high, though Greek uses lots of cheese, rice, eggpplant and olives, they are definitely not paleo!!

You will have no trouble putting together a paleo meal at any good italian restaurant. Traditional Italian food involves a hell of a lot of meat as does traditional Greek.

Mexican restaurants have always been the hardest for me to get a Paleo alternative in. Usually all that is available is chicken wings, and even then they are often covered in something
The answer to your question is 'eat more fat'.

Stop counting calories. If you are eating Paleo, there is usually no need.

If you are having weight loss issues, it'd be a good idea to start posting a detailed food journal, then everyone can help.

'Anecdotal Evidence' is an oxymoron.

I do okay at Mexican restaurants, get fajitas and ask them to not give you the rice, beans and tortillas.  Most will give you extra salad.  Things like carne asada and other stews are good too.

I agree Italian isn't difficult either.  Well, I guess I figure you can be paleo just about anywhere, although sometime sthe sauces are an issue.  But when I was in NJ you could get steamed stuff with no sauce even in a Chinese restaurant.  Not so sure about what is available here, but other than fast food it is about 30 minutes to get to a restaurant, so we won't be going out as much.

What that really meant was Australian  ;D

Our barbies can be greatly improved by the use of grilling planks which gives a whole new meaning to the phrase, "Throw some more wood on the barbie." But we win hands down once we throw on a kangaroo steak. What I mean is we eat our national emblems over here - now that's real committment!

For more info on using a grilling plank (which also means you can add a lot of stuff to your meat):  http://www.aussie-grilling-planks.com/barbeque-planks.html

Haha so true. I have never been to a social event held by an Aussie where I couldn't get my fill of meat.

Actually, I find msyelf very well with African cuisine, meaning Kenya, Congo, Mozambique...not north african (Egypt, Morrocco, Libya make too much use of grains).
Yes they do have some sort of bread, if I'm not wrong it's called "injera", but it's easy to skip.
A lot is about meat or fish (mcuh dried fish as well) cooked in a pot, that is also something I love about african cooking, since it's essentially poor, you won't have to use a lot of bowls and pots, it's basically one single pot placed on the fire with ingredients added at different cooking stages.

Brazillian steak houses are def paleo heaven, but standard Brazillian fare includes lots of rice, potatoes, etc.

I like Moroccan and North African.  A lot of tagines are just meat, fruit and spices - the couscous and pitta can just be skipped, as they often come separate.
Turkish is similar - kebabs/ mixed grill generally come with salad and rice, which can be skipped.

Pub grub (very common in UK) is tricky.  Fish and chips and peas?  nope.  Pie? nope.  Sausage and mash.  Nope!  The only thing you can order is a big steak.

Which cuisines are best with bbqd-type fish dishes, do we think?

Sugar addiction kills more people than all other kinds of drugs combined

If your food needs a prefix, it's not paleo!
