« on: September 01, 2010, 05:19:28 AM »
Guys,

Is it good to mix Fruit (pineapples) with breakfast (bacon and eggs)?? Or should fruit and protein be consumed at at different times.

Thanks,

John

I think that is down to personal preference. I do better if I only eat fruit with a meal protein/ fat, otherwise it spikes my blood sugar too much. But a paleo friend of mine is thriving on having a big bowl of mixed fruit for breakfast each day.

Bacon tastes good with pineapple, banana tastes good with bacon, it's paleo to eat a mixed meal with meats and veg and fruits for breakfast. Breaking stuff up into categories is convention. Find what works for you.

Every morning I have bacon and eggs, with apple fried in the bacon fat.

There may be some wisdom in having fruit after fat/protein as it will slow your digestion of it, but if you are eating Paleo it won't matter much in the scheme of things.
The answer to your question is 'eat more fat'.

Stop counting calories. If you are eating Paleo, there is usually no need.

If you are having weight loss issues, it'd be a good idea to start posting a detailed food journal, then everyone can help.

I think it depends on how sensitive you are. Fruit on it's own, whatever else I am eating at other times, has alwasy meant blood sugar spike, followed by crash within half an hour. Starting the day with fruit on an empty stomach would render me pretty non-functional by 9.30am! I know most other people aren't as crazily sensitive as I am though.

I was insanely sensitive to spikes and rebounds when I first started Paleo. However my insulin sensitivity has slowly recovered to the point that not only can I handle fruit on an empty stomach, I can also handle something pretty bad like a bowl of chips with no spike and rebound.

Fasting will speed up how fast you recover your insulin sensitivity.

Apples with avocado slices are good and the fat slows down the absorption of carbs. However, some people say that avocados are not paleo.  You can also have fruit with walnuts or sprinkled with olive oil.

However, some people say that avocados are not paleo.

Whaaaa?  Say it ain't so!

Do you know why they say that?  It won't keep me from eating them, but I'm curious.

Because it's not native to the areas where paleo man lived. We didn't make it to the Americas until the neolithic times.

Oh, ok.  I'd never given much thought to where they came from.

lol avocadoes today are fleshy mega giants compared with how they originated.

The originals are really small with a big pip and a thin layer of yummy stuff.
